This swordsmith, Tegarayama Masashige [手柄山正繁], was born in 1760 in Himeji, Harima Province. He lived at the base of Mountain Tegara, so he included Tegarayama on his Mei. In 1788, he worked for Matsudaira Tadanobu [松平定信] who was the third feudal lord of the Shirakawa Clan. He moved to Edo and forged. In 1803 he received the title of "Kai no Kami [甲斐守]." He passed away in 1830 at the age of 70. This katana is a rare suguha hamon, although he usually made midare-hamon. Considering the well-preserved nakago and the Chiba Prefecture registration issued in 1951, so colled Daimyo-toroku suggest it was probably a heirloom katana. It comes with an Uchigatana koshirae which has a black lacquer saya. It has passed the Hozon Token shinsa in December 2024. |
