This is a matching daishō pair of fuchi-kashira with peonies and shishi lions design by Sonobe Yoshihide. The peony has long been regarded as the “king of flowers” and symbolizes wealth, prosperity, and auspicious fortune, while the shishi lion is a mythical guardian beast associated with protection and the warding off of evil. The theme of shishi beneath peonies has been depicted in Japanese art since ancient times. According to tradition, even the mighty shishi can be threatened by parasites within its body, but these insects die when touched by the dew falling from peony blossoms. For this reason, the shishi finds peace and safety beneath the peony flowers, making the motif a symbol of invincibility, protection, and peaceful refuge. The metalworker Sonobe Yoshihide was the son of Sonobe Yoshitsugu (later adopted heir and student of Tanaka Yoshiaki). He inherited the artistic lineage of the Gotō school, and his work reflects the refined and formal “iebori” style associated with the Gotō tradition. His craftsmanship is highly sophisticated, with exceptionally precise and controlled chisel work. This work displays excellent harmony as a daishō set. The shakudō nanako ground has a deep blackish patina and an extremely fine surface texture, while the shishi lions are rendered in powerful high relief with remarkable vitality and dimensionality. The peonies are expressed with elegance and dignity through rich iroe decoration. The quality of workmanship throughout clearly demonstrates the artist’s high level of skill. The set remains in excellent condition and possesses both refinement and brilliant decorative appeal.Passed the 2024 Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu shinsa.Large: Kashira 3.46 cm / Fuchi 3.93 cm / Height 1.25 cmSmall: Kashira 3.41 cm / Fuchi 3.86 cm / Height 1.24 cm
