Egawa Sorin[江川宗麟] (first generation) was born in Mito, Hitachi Province in 1774. He studied under Yokoya Terukiyo/Eisei[横谷英精]. He was adopted by Katsura Eiju[桂永寿] who was a disciple of Terukiyo/Eisei, took over the duties of the Katsura family, and became an official craftsman for the Arima family of Kurume Domain. He shaved his head, became a monk, and took the name Sorin. He lived in Shiba, Edo. This fuchi-kashira depicts a dynamic wild horse on a high-quality shakudo ground, carved using the suki-bori and taka-bori techniques. The flowing water carved using the katakiri-bori technique is also magnificent. It was made that Sorin was 82 years old, and this is a dignified fuchi-gashira. It has passed Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2024. |
