For samurai, horses were not only for transportation, but also for companionship as they shared life and death on the battlefield. Cherry blossoms were symbols of Bushido, the way of the samurai who were not cling to life but devoted their lives to righteousness, because of the purity of flowers falling moments. The combination of horses and cherry blossoms is a symbol of the pride of the samurai. This fuchi-kashira depicts cherry blossoms and a wild horse. The gold-plate has been polished off to reveal the mottled pattern of the horse, creating an exquisite work of art.
