| This set of Whitebait among Aquatic Plants fuchi-kashira and menuki is the work of Ichiyanagi Tomoyoshi. It depicts lively whitebait swimming gracefully among aquatic plants. Whitebait, known for inhabiting clear streams, gather in the shallow waters where aquatic plants flourish in early spring. Together with the gently swaying aquatic plants, they form an elegant seasonal motif symbolizing the arrival of spring in a pristine stream. Ichiyanagi Tomoyoshi established one of the principal lineages of the Mito-bori school. The family tradition continued through seven generations, from the first master (1716–1789) to the seventh (1846–1922). Judging from the accompanying kao, this work is attributable to the fifth-generation Tomoyoshi (d. 1858, aged 71), who was a highly accomplished craftsman. The composition is executed with exceptional skill. The whitebait are finely inlaid in gold, silver, and shakudō against a polished shibuichi ground, while the delicately engraved aquatic plants create a remarkable sense of movement and depth. The harmonious combination of refined carving and sophisticated inlay techniques vividly captures the tranquil beauty of a clear spring stream. It passed the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2026. |
